Description

Pay compression—when there’s too little difference in pay between employees with different tenure, performance, or scope—can quietly erode engagement, increase turnover risk, and create inequity concerns. In this session we’ll break down the most common drivers (market movement, minimum wage changes, hiring premiums, remote labor markets, and legacy pay decisions), how to diagnose compression using practical analytics, and a set of sustainable correction strategies that align with your pay philosophy, budget constraints, and compliance obligations. Attendees will leave with tools, talking points, and a decision framework they can apply immediately.

Learning Objectives

  • Define pay compression (internal vs. external) and explain why it occurs in today’s labor market.

  • Identify the most common root causes of compression (e.g., hiring premiums, range movement, minimum wage changes, promotions, and retention adjustments) and the risks of leaving it unaddressed.

  • Use practical metrics to detect and quantify compression (compa-ratio, range penetration, tenure-in-role, pay differentials, and equity flags) and know what “good” looks like.

  • Evaluate and select intervention options (targeted adjustments, structure redesign, promotion practices, hiring guardrails, and communication plans) that fit budget and pay philosophy.

  • Build a repeatable plan to prevent future compression, including governance, guidelines for offers/retention, and ongoing monitoring.
