Presentation Title: I Quit! A leaver’s perspective on organizational exit

Presentation Objectives

1.     Some of the common predictors of exit and common exit paths.

2.     How individuals make sense of or process the decision to quit a job.

3.     How leavers adjust “reasons for leaving” based on the audience

4.     What practitioners can do to keep potential leavers.

Presentation Description

Organizational exit is a meaningful transition for both a leaver and the organization they are leaving.  My research has taken a leaver-focused perspective in an attempt to better understand not simply “why” people leave jobs, but how they make those decisions and how they share those decisions.  Interestingly, though maybe not surprising, the reasons given don’t always align with the truth. In this presentation, I’ll share some of the general research on exit and then discuss what I have learned from my research on leavers over the years. In particular, I’ll share my findings on exit decision-making processes, managing announcements, and what organizations can learn from their leavers.
